Sergio Cunha is Horizons University’s intern and the school official translator and interpreter. Within the framework of his internship, he is also acting as the administrative assistant, supporting the HU staff in its multiple tasks.  Although he lives in Paris, his family is from Portugal… Sergio wanted to share a little about his “homeland.”

When you think about Portugal, what do you see? Perhaps a really small country which needs a lot of help from the European Union in these times of hard economic crisis. Recently, some countries were reluctant to help Portugal but they probably did not know the following. What about you, did you know?
Portugal is the westernmost country of Europe and has the oldest borders in the world, established in 1249. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal.
Portugal discovered Brazil and the sea route to India and the Portuguese empire lasted six centuries, the longest global empire in history.

Portuguese is the fifth most spoken language in the world, with around 270 million official speakers in five continents.

Portugal abolished slavery in 1751, more than a century before the United States, and was the first country in the world to abolish the death penalty.

Portugal is a European leader in renewable energy as a result of an aggressive plan named E4 (Energy Efficiency and Endogenous Energies) launched in 2001 and aimed at improving energy efficiency and production.

Regarding Portugal Sergio remarks; “I love going there every summer with my parents to see my family. Here is a funny fact: during the whole year, certain villages in Portugal are empty but when August comes, the “imigrantes” bring them back to life!”
